How to remove stale Site

$

Hi. I installed SRM 6.5 at two sites and paired them successfully. The SRM server at Site A had a catastrophic failure and I wasn't able to break the SRM pairing before deleting the SRM server from vCenter. I created a new SRM server with the exact same name and extension ID as the last.

Now, when I log into vCenter/SRM, I see 3 sites. The old site that I never got the chance to break pairing with, the new site associated with the new install, and Site B. When I attempt to break the pair between Site B and the old Site A it complains that it cannot complete the operation because Site A cannot be found. This is true as I've explained I had to blow that SRM server away.

It seems that Site B is holding onto the paired association with a server that no longer exists. How can I break the pair at this point? I do have the GUID of the old SRM server. Do I have to go into the embedded vPostgres and delete that GUID somewhere?

There must be a way to have SRM break the connection to a server that no longer physically exists?

Protection group not configured with Replicated RDM

I am trying to configure protection group having multiple volumes and VM's, one of those VM's have Raw Disk (RDM) attached to it, all VM's are configured properly for protection except the VM that is having RDM, be noted all my volumes including one attached as RDM are replicated to recovery site, replication of these devices can be seen in SRM.

Error:

"Device hard disk 2 is not configured, please specify a recovery site location or detach it"

Be ensured that replication of RDM volume as well other volumes is evident from Storage GUI and in array manager of SRM

Single VM single datastore recovery plan realistic test

I am using Nutanix SRA for array based replication with SRM.  I have done a test recovery plan run with snapshot clone of the volumes at the DR site OK.  However I want to verify the breaking of replication also which would be used with a full recovery plan run.  Would a single VM in a single datastore recovery plan accomplish this (run the recovery plan and verify replication is broken and DR site comes up read-write and VM is powered on)...without affecting the other replicated volumes/protected VMs?

NFS export during test failover/real failover incorrect

$

When I perform a test failover SRM creates an export called “testfailover_<volume_name>_<exportpolicy>". The issue is that it populates with incorrect and/or missing IP's. Where is this automatically generated export grabbing it's information from? I have a default export policy with all of the correct IP's but a test failover never uses that export.

How can I ensure test failovers and actual real failovers use the export that I want? I should mention the storage is NetApp

Full recovery plan without reprotect (severed WAN)

I would like to sever the WAN connection between my 2 datacenters, run recovery, test basic functionality of all VMs and then shut down the recovered datacenter.  Since there was no communication between SRM to SRM and VC to VC, what will I need to do after shutdown of the recovered datacenter?  I was going to do the below:

- delete the Recovery Plan and protection group in DR

- power down all DR VMs and remove from inventory

- unmounts datastore from DR hosts

- get replication reset (Nutanix) in primary > DR direction as needed from DR

- reconnect the WAN

- get replication reset (Nutanix) in primary > DR direction as needed from primary

- ??? with SRM

What state will SRM be in after reconnect of the datacenters?  Will it see no recovery plan, no protection groups (deleted at DR) and I will just recreate the PG and Recovery Plan anew and go on my way?

Managing Permissions in a Shared Recovery Site Configuration

$

Hello we have two sites with two vcenter servers and SRM with twin versions so all ok there. We would like to implement a DR scenario for multiple independent offices. These parties we'll need to create and run their own Recovery Plans. However we need to provide these parties enough credentials to view and manage only what is theirs. I have read these two VMware documents and in the second one I read:

1.  Managing Permissions in a Shared Recovery Site Configuration

2. Site Recovery Manager Roles Reference

<All users must have at least the System> Read privilege on the root folders of vCenter Server and the Site Recovery Manager root nodes on both sites.>

Now what does that mean exactly? That the read permission has to be applied  to the top root of  the vcenter server? Or to the top root of their own folders in the vcenter server VM view in the client? If it is the first assumption the users will have permissions to view other parties VMs and Hosts. In our  environment the parties we manage don't have dedicated Clusters. So we should have a dedicated vcenter server for each of our party/customer?

Does anyone have experience with SRM and shared permissions. We obviously will retain the SRM administrator role, however what leaves in doubt is the statement that "All users must have at least the System > Read etc...."  so probably it seems that SRM is not the right product for our scenario and maybe the vSphere RM would be a better solution.

many thanks in advance!

SRM with Platform Services Controller High Availability (PSC HA)

$

Hi,

I am looking to understand if SRM 6.5.x supports Platform Services Controller High Availability (PSC HA)? (VMware Knowledge Base)

I am deploying vCenter Server High Availability (VCHA) clusters with PSC HA using F5 LTM Load Balancers, but I am not 100% sure if SRM supports it?

I have attached a block diagram of my proposed final setup. There will be two VCHA clusters and two PSC's per SSO site, with 2 sites in the SSO domain. All vCenter Servers will be federated using Enhanced Linked Mode (ELM). Only 1 VCHA cluster in each SSO site will be using SRM to protect/recover it's workloads.

All vCenters & PSC's will be running version 6.5 update 1.

The PSC's will been deployed in sequence 1->2->3->4 and a final manual PSC replication agreement will be created between PSC 4 and PSC 1, to create a ring topology.

If I cannot use PSC HA with SRM:

  1. can I still use it for the workload VCHA cluster?
  2. which PSC's should I directly configure SRM to use?

Any advice or gotchas you can point out will be appreciated.

Cheers,

M

SRM Services Keeps Crashing

Hello All

we have a SRM at version 6.0 and vcenter at 6.0 update 1. the array manager is from Hitachi . we already has a par of array managers replicated and working as expected .all was working until we decide to add a new array manager pair for a new datastore group for replication in SRM .

we added the array manager individually to the sites, when added to the DR location array manager, all went as expected and when we did the same on the production side, the SRM service starts crashing .

have tried repairing modifying the SRM service without any help, even tried a re-install with the same Database, but no use as the service start and then crashes . the following are seen in the logs

I am getting this during recovery plan execution. Any help from anyone?

"Error - Cannot detach SCSI LUN"

Can SRM test failovers be performed if WAN connection is taken offline between sites?

$

I am trying to figure out the options for testing SRM.    I know that I can perform a test failover (to test bubble network) when the WAN is up and both SRM instances can talk to eachother.  What if I wanted to disconnect the WAN and execute a test failover?  Will SRM let me do a test failover if the protected site is offline?   The thinking is that if the disconnecting of the WAN is a requirement for SRM testing,  that  I would still like to do a test failover as a real failover would be a mess to cleanup when it is a test.

Thanks,

Cannot configure VM Portgroup Protected and Recovery site using Distributed Switch

$

Please someone help me.

I am using distributed switches in my virtual infrastructure vSphere 5.5. My hosts have 4 NIC each, 2 uses for IO and 2 uses for a WAN. when I am going to configure portgroup for SRM, there is no option for distributed switches. There has standard switch option for portgroup configure. For NIC redundancy I have no option to free any physical NIC.

Has any option to configure portgroup in distributed switch for SRM both site port groups?

vCenter 6.5 with Replicaton appliance 6.5 and SRM 6.5

I have recently met a problem when configuring my Virtual environment with VMware automatic DRM. Before we started using the web client, the desktop client was way too easy to manage the environment. But since its no longer supported n 6.5 am having a touch time managing my Virtual DC. I have to check on replication or else it will drop, and will have RPO errors.

For every session that you need to check replication, you have to supply the username and password just to get the progress, but when we were using the application client this was not the case. To make it worse, i have had two scenarios when  was configuring SRM. This s a pain n the unmentionables, pairing will not finish and you will have to have a number of tries before it works.

The vSphere was straight forward in giving you the errors when ever something is not configured properly, but the web client seems to be doing the possible opposite, and yet they call it an upgrade.

Am not sure if this is only happening to me or there are other people facing the same issues. VMware please address this problem as ts affecting our daily activities

SRM 6.5 - Run Recovery Plan (Not Available)

Hi vSphere experts,

We have a Recovery Plan with a single VM protected with vSphere Replication.  It tests and cleans up fine, but "Run Recovery" is greyed out.  When you hover the mouse cursor over the "Run" button, you see: "Run Recovery Plan (Not Available)".

Anyone know why this might be? We want to actually run it and validate that the VM is recovered in the Protected Site.

Thanks!

Hi all,

We have a pair of new VCSA 6 systems and a pair of new SRM 6 servers. Each SRM server has registered with its vCenter OK but the SRM servers won't pair - the SRM logs point to a certificate problem:

16-05-12T22:48:50.639+01:00 [03108 verbose 'DrSiteSiteManager'] Established TCP connection to 'XX.XX.XX.XX:9086'

--> ExpectedThumbprint:
--> ExpectedPeerName: FQDN_OF_VCENTER
--> The remote host certificate has these problems:
-->
--> * The host certificate chain is incomplete.
-->
--> * unable to get local issuer certificate"

We're tried removing/reinstalling SRM (and accepting the certificate as part of the install) but no change.

Any assistance much appreciated.

SRM Configuration for DR site datastore

Hi All,

i'm working in an environment composed of two sites with EMC VNX and RecoverPoint at each site.

I configured SRM 6.5 with storage based replication and created a consistency group with one LUN replicated from Protected site to DR site.

This LUN/Datastore contain one VM.

Want to know if have to create a datastore on ESXi à DR site for replicated LUN, or it's automatic??

When the recovery plan is processed, the datasotre of DR site is automaticaly mounted ???

Help me understand this process.!!!!

Thanks
