Recover Point SRA issue?

$

0

I'm running SRM 5.1 with vCenter 5.1 with EMC Recover Point 3.5 SP1.P2.

When I do a test failover or a planned failover.  It fails because the ESX hosts on the DR side are unable to mount the datastores.  When I log into EMC Unisphere the ESXi hosts on the DR side are not in the storage group.  If I put the hosts into the storage group I can run the failover.

I was under the impression that you wouldn't have to do this and the Recover Point SRA/Recover Point would talk to the VNX SAN and add the hosts to the storage group automatically on failover.

EMC is telling me that the SRA won't do that.  VMware is telling me that it should do it.

Anybody else integrated Recover Point into SRM before?

VMware SRM with remote host and remote array.

Any issues with the following remote site scenario from a VMware vCenter or SRM perspective.

In this scenario. three sites are managed under 1 vCenter and recovered to the DR facility using SRM and vCenter.  the main question mark is around the role of the WAN/Latency and bandwidth in this situation.

vCenter 1  (At Primary site with remote  offices under management)

  • Single vCenter
  • SRM server
  • Cluster 1
    • 5 Hosts
    • NetApp Storage replicated to DR facility synchronous
  • Cluster 2 (Remote Site 1 with WAN connectivity)
    • 2 Hosts
    • NetApp Storage (at remote site) asynchronous replicated to DR facilit
  • Cluster 3 (Remote Site 2 with WAN connectivity)
    • 2 Hosts
    • NetApp Storage (at remote site) asynchronous replicated to DR facility

vCenter 2 (DR facility)

  • Single vCenter
  • Single SRM
    • 5 Hosts
    • NetApp Storage Array recieving replication from primary site and  two instances of remote site storage.

Points of discussion.

  1. Latency with hosts under vCenter issues - I am happy this is not an issue based on http://blogs.vmware.com/performance/2012/06/vcenter-50-performance-in-remote-offices-and-branch-offices-robo.html
  2. Latency with SRA -> Array communications with the remotes. (Any thoughts on this requirements?)
  3. Any other potential issues?

Any feedback appreciated?

SRM 5.0 and Netapp VSC 4.1: Backup error

$

I was doing some tests with SRM and noticed that when i do a Failover  and then a Failback all Netapp VSC backups stop working. What i can tell until  now is that after failback the UUID of datastore changes (configured SRM to  not rename the datastore) and the backup job cannot find it.

I  have to remove and add the volumes again in VSC to solve, but with this  i lose all my old backups. Anyone have this problem and is there a way  to solve this?

Thanks

SRM With SAS connections

hi,

I am going to make a proposal for a DC & DR site with vcenter Site Recovery manager. We use IBM DS3524 (firmware version 7.84.44.00) storage with SAS connections to the hosts. vmware says SRM supports only with ISCSI and Fibre channel. So can i do the SRM replication with SAS connections. please update me asap guys.

thanks

vSphere Replication 5.1.0.1 unable to recovery unavailable VM

Hi,

I have only one vCenter with vSphere Replication 5.1.0.1.

If source VM is unavalibale (disconected host and datastore) I perform recovery of target VM, but task is failed. Recovery is successfully only, if source VM is available.

How can I recover target VM, if source VM is unavailable?

Thanks :-)

Lets Get Physical ;)

Hi All.....

Im going to be implementing an SRM solution but I also have physicals at my primary site.  Was just wondering what do you people out there do with these.  I want to make the whole Recovery site virtual, so I could P2V the physicals but then there is the question of keeping them updated.  Does this have to be manual or is there some magical process / software that would allow changes in the physical to be replicated to the virtual instance... eg patches, code changes etc.

Cheers

Remove and add new array manager - SRM 4.1

Hi,

We have SRM 4.1 configured with a array manger IP address of EMC solution enabler server which manages EMC symetrix arrays. We have many SRM protection plans setup already. Now we have installed new solution enabler server which has visiblity to the arrays managed by the current solution enabler server and also has visiblity to couple of new arrays. So now i have to replace my old array manager with the new one in SRM.

Can i go to array manager --> "Configure" --> select the old array manager --> click Remove?   Then "Add" new array manager.

Wnated to know when i remove the old array manager and before i add the new array manager, will my existing protection groups crash?

SRM server as part of a protection group

Hi,

I just tried a planned migration with interesting results and I would like to ask you to give me an advice for best practice on that:

- two sites, each with 3 ESXi 5.0 hosts and its own vCenter+SRM server running together on a VM with standalone win2008 r2 sp1 server (not part of a domain)

- each site has its own NetApp box with two primary NFS volumes and two replicas from the other site (snapmirror) plus one non-replicated mini-volume for SRM placeholders

- both primary volumes at each site are covered by protection groups and a recovery plan. It means SRM+vCenter server is part of its own protection group

In a disaster recovery mode, to finish the recovery plan, the vcenter+srm from the protection site has to be started, so it needs to be started on the recovery side.

In planned migration mode, the recovery plan cannot finnish because automated shutdown oh the vcenter+srm on the protected side breaks down the migration.

Distaster recovery is more important than planned migration, so I think that protecting vcenter+srm server by its own measures is all right. But what about the planned migration ? Is there a way to tell the SRM at the protected site to do everything what is needed and then shutdown without errors preventing the recovery plan to be completed from the recovery site ? I hope there is a better solution than to have another pair replicated volume just for the vcenter+srm server. As a workaround now I need to stop the rest of VMs at the protected site manually and re-run the recovery plan in DR mode once for moving to recovery site and then again to tell SRM that the machines were powered off at the protected site before it can advance to reprotection mode, which is far from an ideal solution.

Thanks on advance for comments and suggestions.

I'm getting ready to install SRM and have requested that databases be created. The database Administrator is asking me if it is ok to use different versions of
MS SQL at the two sites, 2005 SP4 and 2008R2. Is it a requirement that the same database version is used at each site.?

Problem Hitachi SRA

Dear,
I am in process of configuring Site Recovery Manager with Hitachi Storage. When the option to Add Array in Site Recovery Manager, sheds the following error: 'discoverArrays'.

In addition, the SRA is not leaving logs to see what happens, if I have the SRM logs.

Note: We have followed the instructions in the document, but no solution yet.

Hi All,

I am planning for implementation of SRM 5.1 in vShere 5.1 and have little doubt about authentication of all the components involved here, i have AD in the environment already.

We need authentication at multiple level

vCenter service, vCenter DB

SRM Service, SRM DB

SSO

etc

I want to know what is the best practice for the authentication ?

Creating a single Service Account and use it for everything vCenter, DB, SRM, SSO etc.

or how to manage this part, I am looking for some best practice in this area, please help.

thanks,

Implementing Shared Recovery Sites in an existing SRM environment

$

I have an existing SRM 5.1 environment comprised of a single protected site and a single recovery/DR site.  A third site has just been brought online and I would like to implement Shared Recovery Sites in order to use a single, common recovery site for the two production sites.  I know how to set up a shared recovery site infrastructure from scratch (by specifying a unique SRM ID during the install of each SRM pair) but is there a procedure that needs to be followed to convert an already existing SRM environment into the shared recovery site model?

My assumption is that, because the existing SRM deployment has a unique SRM ID (whatever the default is for any "normal" install) and i'll be creating the new SRM pair with a unique SRM ID, each pair will essentially end up with unique IDs and everything will function as expected.  Before I go ahead with this though, I just want to be sure I don't need to perform a reinstall or a repair on the existing environment.

Has anyone done this before or is there a VMware doc I'm missing somewhere?

Thanks,

Matt

If you have multiple ESXi farms at one site - how do you setup SRM on them for one fail over site?

$

Question:  We currently have two ESXi farms - one in our central data center and one in our remote data center.

We have SRM installed at both locations and paired up with the two vCenters.  I am in the process of adding in a new ESXi farm to our central data center.  I will not be adding second one in the remote data center but I still need some of the servers on the new farm to have SRM fail over.  Can some one point me to where I can see how to do this?  I would assume I would create a new SRM server for the new farm but not sure how the pairing will work sence the remote vCenter is already paired with the central one.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

More information:

At central office:  5 ESXi 5.1 Host - Cluster name JCDCESX1

At central office:  3 ESXi 5.1 Host - Cluster name JCDCESX2

Two vCenter servers at central office:  vSphere 5.1 Server names:  VSVCWP01 & VSVCWP02

At remote office:  5 ESXi 5.1 Host - Cluster name KCDCESX1

1 vCenter server at remote office:  vSphere 5.1 Server name: KCVSVCWP01

SRM 5.1: Add Command with PowerCLI script, logging does not work

Hey everyone,

I implemented SRM 5.1 and have been successful so far. I'm now in the phase of making all the really nice extras that makes SRM worth the extra money. However, as base of my implementation I used Mike Laverick's book "Administering VMwqre Site Recovery Manager 5.0" which has been excellent so far. I now face an issue with one of the tips in the book which I'm stuck at.

At page 325 Mike describes how to add scripts to a recovery plan using a script, which uses the "Start-Transcript $logfile" to create a logfile.

I created my own script and added the required lines to create the logfile, which, if run by the service account from the powershell window completely works. So not only the script, but also the logging works.

Now if I add the script to run as an extra step the script works completely, the logfile gets created but the only thing inside the script is:

Is there anybody who knows how to fix this? Again, the script runs successful (I see the results) and if started on the commandline by the same user the logfile displays also, for example:

vsphere replication questions!!

I have few questions regarding the SRM replication.

1. First I will replicate the machine from Protected to Recovery, then can I have both machines to be up and running at the same time?

2. What will happen if I change the name of the server on the Recovery site? Will the Replication still continues?

3. Suppose if I have the server in Recovery site, if I do changes in the recovery site and now if I do a sync with the Primary later again , what will happen to the changes on the Recovery site, will it be overridden with the Primary?

SSO 5.1 and SRM Disaster Recovery

Working that has a massive VM Project.  They are upgrading to vSphere 5.1 across the board while creating a brand new DR Site.  My question is on SSO with SRM.

Then goal is to have two environments with SRM, PRODUCTION and DEV.  With SRM working the VMware Replication to the new DR Site on the other side of the country.  So we need 4 VCenters (Site A Prod and Dev & Site B ProdDR and DevDR).  The actual data replication will be done by the storage systems themselves from Site A to Site B.

The VM Admins here want to have the VCs in linked mode so they can see all the VCs. SSO is required since its 5.1.  Details below -

MUST:

  • Everything running on vSphere 5.1
  • SRM both environments from Site A to Site B across the country
  • Have SSO work on Site B should Site B lose connection to Site A (any outage, doesnt have to be DR related like; busted line, switch burns out, Godzilla attacks)
    • NOTE: Both sites are hosted, Corporate Offices are located at "3rd site".  Scope of DR Project is only main Datacenters, not Corporate location.

NICE TO HAVE

  • View all the VCs from Web Client and Desktop Client (Web Client still does not support SRM at this time)

We have a few questions for the client, and SSO is a hot topic on the "best" way to execute it.

Couple of questions

  • What is recommened SSO execution for the requirements?
    • Would it be better to have SSO HA, Multisite or SSO installed individually on each VC (Site A and Site B)?
  • With SSO and SRM, is it worth having Linked Mode to all VCs to log in (single pane of glass argument)?

Thanks,

Configuring Network Mapping from RS back to PS

$

Hi folks,

I'm starting the implementation of SRM 5.02 in my environment, and I have a few questions about networking that I hopoe someone can answer.

I have gone through the whole process of pairing the sites, but I am a little confused about the netowrk mappings.

At my Protected  Site (PS) I have 3 different networks that I need to port over to my Recovery Site. At my Recovery (DR) Site I have one network.(This is sufficient considering we have a small set of systems at the DR site). I was able to map  the 3 networks successfuly from my PS to my RS. My intention is to re-IP the VM's at the RS.

However, when configuring mapping back from my RS to my PS, I am able to map only one network back to my Protected Site. This seems to be a limitation/configration of SRM

Besides creating additional VLAN's at my RS to map back to PS, is there any other way to map  a single VLAN at my RS to my PS?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer!

SRM & Managed Object References Between vCenter Server Instances

$

Does the Managed Object Reference for objects migrated via SRM remain the same from vCenter Server to vCenter Server instance?

If the MOR changes, how is SRM maintaining which object relates to which object between sites?

Does vSphere or SRM have the concept of GUIDs (as opposed to UUIDs)?

SRM - Possibility of Auto failover and Auto failback (No manual intervention)

  1. Auto Failover from Site A to Site B with out manual intervention?
  2. Auto Failback from Site B to A with out manual interventaion?
  3. What will happen if Single virtual machine fails?
  4. What will happen if OS fails in any virtual machine? Only restoring from back up or any other solution?
  5. We have EMC VNX identical storage in both sites with mirror view storage replication (Active/Passive). Does this support VMware SRM?

Thanks in advance for your valuable comments and suggestions.
