SRM 6.0 two sites one vcenter

Hello,

I have a question in regards to SRM 6.0. and I am not sure if anyone has worked on it before.

Do I need to have two different vCenters to utilize the recovery features of SRM between two sites ?

Or it can work fine if there is only one vCenter managing both sites ?

I am asking about an environment where we are deploying SRM 6.0, vCenter 6.0 and vSphere 6.0

Connecting the SRA

Hello,

I'm preparing to configure my array manager but I have a few questions.  This is a demo environment, however the XIV I am connecting to also hosts production machines.  I'm trying to understand exactly how much access I'm going to giving my demo environment once I have entered the information below.

Am I correct in assuming that my demo hosts will only be able to perform tasks against the storage LUNs which have been specifically presented to it?  I'm just want to understand how this works so that I am able to assure the stake holders of the production machines that this does not present any risk at all to their machines.

I know misconfigurations can happen, particularly in a demo environment, I just want to know for sure that although I am connecting to the XIV itself I can't do anything to VMs which the ESXi hosts do not have visibility of.

Thanks.

sdrf problem

Hi,

Here's the problem.

I have 2 vcenters v6.0 and 2 srm servers v6.0. I paired them sucessfully.

Then I have emc vmax 10k,solution enabler 8.1 and emc sdrf adapter 6.0. I added storage array, created protection groups and recovery plans.

But when I click to "test recovery plans" it breaks on "create writable storage snapshot".

Failed to create snapshots of replica devices.

Cause:

Failed to create snapshot of replica device 004CF.

Cause:

SRA command 'testFailoverStart' failed for device '004CF'.

Cause:

An error occurred while performing testfailover start operation.

Please check EmcSrdfSra log file for more information on the error.

EmcSrdfSra

SraDevicePairings::GetCopyInfo       ] [ERROR]: A valid CopyInfo block could not be found in the options file that has Symm [000298700570]. Exiting with failure

TestFailoverStartCommand::RunOnDevices   ] [ERROR]: Failed to fetch copy info from the device pairs options file. Exiting with failure

There isn't any data in for example EmcSrdfSraTestFailoverConfig.xml

<TestFailoverInfo>

    <CopyType>CLONE</CopyType>

    <CopyMode>NOCOPY</CopyMode>

    <SavePoolName></SavePoolName>

    <DeviceList>

      <DevicePair>

        <Source></Source>

        <Target></Target>

      </DevicePair>

    </DeviceList>

  </CopyInfo>

</TestFailoverInfo>

Also there's a problem with compatibility, my storage has firmware 5876.286.194 which is not supported on vmware compatibility matrix with my sra.

https://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/detail.php?productid=39925&deviceCategory=sra&details=1&srmVer=308&partner=30&releases=308&arrayTypes=2&arrayTypes=2&page=1&display_interval=10&sortColumn=Partner&sortOrder=Asc

So, is it a firmware problem or permissions on storage or I don't know...

Hi All,

Kindly I would like to know the best way to check the functionality of VM's on recovery site after running test recovery Plan (ruuning on default isolated network in Recovery Site)

Normally I can access them through vsphere console but is there any other way to access the VM's?

Thanks

I had rebuild my VCenters to seperate my PSC and broke my SRMs.

After an uninstalled and reinstall of SRM using the same DB, I get the following error just before the service starts:

--> Panic: Assert Failed: "from->GetDatastoreMoId() == to->GetDatastoreMoId() (Dr::Storage::DataAccess::`anonymous-namespace'::CopyReplicatedDatastoreDbObj: The source datastore MoRef (MoRef=[datastore-8738:vim.Datastore:b8dce6c8-d2df-433d-b521-a1d7742ec424]) does not match the target datastore MoRef (MoRef=[datastore-8738:vim.Datastore:28709505-C83A-406A-8E6C-855900005E17]))" @ d:/build/ob/bora-2700459/srm/src/storage/dataaccess/dbUtils.cpp:1548

Any suggestions on how to resolve the issue?

thanks,

Site Recovery Manager 6 - Implementation Questions

Hello everyone,

I'm a little new to SRM and had a few questions that I wasn't able to find.  Hopefully you can help (thanks in advance)!

1. Is there a recommended install path for vCenter (Embedded, External or External PSC) when deploying SRM 6?

2. If I go with the External PSC option, how do I install the second site?  I've been trying to find articles and docs but no luck.

Thanks again for all the help!

Problemas con Site Pair (Site Recovery Manager 6.1)

Hola,

Agradezco vuestra ayuda.

Saludos,

SRM 5.8, virtual appliance and replica network

Hi Guys,

i have 2 site in DR with SRM 5.8 and 2 VR Appliance and would routing all replication traffic on a dedicate network between the site but have some doubt.

Is it correct say that the replication traffic for a VM pass trought a VRApp01 on site1 > VRApp02 on site2 ?

If yes, can i setup a VRApp01/02 for use a dedicate network (no routing to other network) for the replica ?

Thanks in advance.

VSAN with SRM inquiries

1. SRM can only be installed on a WIndows based vCenter? or it can work between Windows based and Appliance based vCenter?

2. In the event that we will be using VSAN, I can only do vSphere replication to replicate from production to recovery site? Anyone can suggest where can I place my placeholder datastore? Can I have it as a seperate disk on my local server or it must be on a SAN attached storage? If it can be on a local storage, can I use one single placeholder datastore residing on one host for the whole VSAN cluster or I will need to have seperate placeholder datastore per host in the VSAN cluster?

Expand disk in vSphere SRM protected environment

Hello everyone,

I am new to this community and SRM. I want to expand 1 disk on 4 different virtual machines all are protected by SRM. Out 4 disks 3 are thick lazy zero and 1 is thick eager zero disk. I have below questions:

  • May I need to disable or remove the replication? Is it for all the disks in a VM or for a specific disk I am going to expand.
  • Do I need to rename all disk's folder at destination or renaming specific disk's (which I am going to expand) folder will work.
  • Please let me know anything that I have missed or best practices to be follow.

SRM & vCenter on same server

I have two relatively small sites (<20 VMs per site).

Both sites have their own vCenter installation on a VM.

I have decided to implement SRM.

Although not recommended for larger production sites - are there any disadvantages to installing SRM on the same VM as SRM in smaller environments?

It is fully supported and I can't find any reason to justify installing a separate VM per site purely to host SRM.

What are the basic factors that would lead me to choose vsphere replication or SRM in a customers environment?

vCenter/SRM upgrade to 6.1

All,

We recently upgraded our vCenter server from 5.5 Update 2 to 6.0 Update1b.  Everything with the PSC and vCenter upgrade went swimmingly.  The problem that we are running into is with SRM.  We upgraded SRM from 5.5.1 to 6.0 which went through successfully.  However, whenever we log into the vSphere Web Client and run SRM we get the following message when clicking on sites:

Cause:

The connection to remote servers of SRM Server at https://<IPofLocalSRMServer>:9086/vcdr/vmomi/sdk needs to be reconfigured.

I can't find anything on this error and have been waiting for hours for VMware support to call.  Any ideas?  We are getting this message with both (remote and local) SRM servers.

I suspect it's a certificate issue however I am unable to pinpoint where.  When going to https://srmhost:9086 I get the following:

Missing Alarm Definitions - Fresh Install

$

I have done a number of installations of SRM 5.8, 6.0, and 6.1 over the past year or two.  Every time I have done the installation, I have noticed that the SRM alarm definitions do not show up in the web client or the windows client to allow configuration of e-mail alerts for various SRM events.  I have not been able to find any other posts or a VMware KB article on the issue.  With the fact that I have done the installations a number of times with the same results I am wondering if anyone else has run into this and has a fix.  I have had customers open cases with VMware on this issue but am not aware if they ever fixed the issue.  With a recent new installation, the SRM alarms AND the vSphere Replication alarm are missing.

Thanks!

AD behavior in DR with different IP segment

$

Hi all

I got source site with VMware and VMs. I got VMs with AD and Windows servers. I want to replicate all my servers to DR site in deferent location that got deferent segment from the source. If I replicate a DC that mean in Fail over I will change it IP in target site and it may cause unexpected results and problems. In a scenario I keep a secondary DC in target and use DC replication as most do, if I do test fail over by join it to bubble network with all failed over server and they may change an attribute (for an unknown reason) and then I UNDO Fail Over and connect the DC back to production. It will replicate back the attribute change to source prod environment and it may cause issues I want to avoid.
How do you think I should handle this? How does other organizations handle this in manual test DR where they need the target secondary DC connected to DR? Does they take the chance?

Thanks
