SRM with Multiple Storage Arrays and Array based Replication

$

I have few queries for which I am finding answers.

My Environment:

Protected Site

vCenter 5.5

SRM 5.8

EMC Recovery Point for Replication

EMC VNX as Storage Array

EMC SRA configured in SRM to talk to EMC Recovery Point

Recovery Site

vCenter 5.5

SRM 5.8

EMC Recovery Point for Replication

EMC VNX as Storage Array.

EMC SRA configured in SRM to talk to EMC Recovery Point

I have a cloud solution running, as I onboard a customer.

- Customer is a resource group on vCenter.

- Datastore Cluster for that Customer with set of Datastore as per the Quota is also provisioned

- Same set of provisioning is performed automatically at Recovery Site.

- Dedicated Protection Group and Recovery Plan is created for the Customer with attached Datastore Cluster in SRM configuration.

This is happening normally with EMC VNX as Storage Array.

We are planning to introduce another Storage Array (all flash/high IOPs) which will be integrated with EMC Recovery Point as well.

I want to provide the customer both options together for which I am confused how SRM will behave as SRA will detect LUNs from both Arrays which will be visible to SRM.

The datastore cluster will have mixture of datastores for different array.

Just wondering if there is any challenge in the following situation or it will be straight forward? as for myself all I want is a replicated LUN/Datastore from Storage and to be visible by SRM through SRA adopter.

SRM - Test & Recovery IP addressing

Hi, I'd like to know if it's possible to define different IP addressing schemes within SRM (6.1) depending on whether the activity is a test (on an isolated network) or actual recovery (onto the active/routed DR network). It doesn't seem like this is possible natively - if so then what's the best way to achieve this?

Thanks in advance.

Sites unable to pair after IP change . SRM 6.1

Hello all,

I'm currently having a problem pairing sites after the IP address of one of the SRM servers needed to change. I ran through the modify install to attempt to have it pick up the new IP and pair again. I even tried uninstalling SRM completely, creating a brand new VM and installed SRM on it with the new IP. The correct IP is shown in the web interface and also the managed object browser under the vcDr extension. The "Pair Sites" wizard does complete successfully after typing in the required info. The pop up goes away but the paired site never shows up in the web client. The desktop vSphere client shows that the sites are trying to pair, but it eventually gives one of two errors:

2.PNG

asdf.PNG

After seeing these I tried to create new admin accounts under vsphere.local for both sites and set vsphere.local to default domain. Ran through modify install again with new account info, and typed new account info while attempting to pair sites, but I still get the same problem.

Digging into the vmware-dr.log shows me that the SSL client handshake fails, and then SSO login fails assuming due to the SSL/certificate problem. Here were those two messages that stood out to me:

SRM pair site fail. What's the dependency chains SRM use for ssoClient jar

Hi,

When we try to pair site for SRM, we got this kind of error: "Failed to acquire token from SSO server."

srm pairing.png

From the log, we can find

Caused by: javax.xml.bind.JAXBException: class org.oasis_open.docs.ws_sx.ws_trust._200512.RequestSecurityTokenType nor any of its super class is known to this context.

at com.sun.xml.internal.bind.v2.runtime.JAXBContextImpl.getBeanInfo(JAXBContextImpl.java:564)

at com.vmware.vim.sso.client.impl.processors.request.RequestBuilderImpl.marshallJaxbElement(RequestBuilderImpl.java:255)

In our plugin project,we export those packages.

Export-Package:

...

org.oasis_open.docs.ws_sx.ws_trust._200512;version="1.0.1.SNAPSHOT";

uses:="javax.xml.bind.annotation,

javax.xml.bind,

javax.xml.namespace,

org.w3c.dom,

com.rsa.names._2009._12.std_ext.ws_trust1_4.advice",

Obviously the package that causes the OSGI wiring issues DOES get exported from this bundle which causes disturbance in bundle classloader wirings.

Currently, we are using the shipped wsdl of VMware Managment SDK to generated the source code/packages for reference in our plugin project, which cause the conflict with SRM plugin.

So we are searching to use the internal VMware ssoClient jar just as SRM do instead of export packages.

When we were using internal ssoClient jar, we got many of dependency issue. We want to refer to SRM's dependency chains.

The question is how the SRM handle the dependency chains when using ssoClient?

Testing BEFORE Testing a Planned Migration

$

Ok, so I'm "new" to SRM, even though I've been working on this project for a considerable amount of time. It seems straightforward, but there are lots of gotchas I'm learning about. My goal is to test SRM as it was set up by consultants a few years ago, but has not gone through a proof of concept, and I've been given that task.

We only have eight critical servers on our Recovery site, out of 50 or so that aren't protected. If there is a disaster, we will be running a bare-bones environment. Just a few app servers, a db server and View so people can remote in, assuming our Protected site is unavailable. I'm in LA, so I'm assuming an earthquake, for instance.

In any event, I've been trying to plan for an actual test that is the least disruptive as possible, over a weekend, and am at the point where I've been running a test of the recovery plan, but it is pretty restrictive and not very representative of an actual DR situation. For instance, I bring up the VMs, usually all of them report the error of VMWare Tools timing out. Then I try to test our db server by consoling in (MSSQL) and can open the SQL Management console, but can't actually get into any of the databases. We run SnapDrive, which doesn't mount the LUNs, but they are mounted in Storage Manager and are presented.

Since the Test environment uses an isolated network, I was wanting to use IP customization to bring the VMs up so they could talk to the AD server that already resides in production on the Recovery Site (it's a small branch office with a vCenter server, AD server, SRM server and a couple others). I'd like to create NAT rules for the connection servers that will be spun up, and be able to test those.

Another issue is the VMs are old. We SnapMirror multiple times a day, but I didn't understand the explanation from the VMWare engineer of why the latest image/snapmirror isn't being used when I run the Test Recovery Plan. It was explained that in Test, everything is brought up as read only, so every time I run a new test, it reverts back to the same (old) image.

I'm doing all this to have a more solid feeling before the ACTUAL test of a Planned Migration. That's what VMWare advised me to do to run a more realistic, robust test.

Am I on the right track? I know this is kind of long winded and not very detailed about our environment, and I'm being asked to write up a detailed project plan, but I don't know what I don't know and frankly the documentation is not the clearest.

I realize I'm not asking this in the clearest terms either, mostly because I'm a bit confused and somewhat wary that I'm going to miss some critical setup items, and will hit potentially damaging snags when doing the "real" test.

Any good documentation for best practices would be helpful, or some clarification on the items I mentioned would be great. And yes, I have been searching the community and The Google.

TIA!

Steve

Hi,

We have 2 sites, site A & site B. We have some VMs from site A are protected & configured DR at site B using storage replication & vice versa.

Now we want to add 2 more sites, site C & site D.

1.Set storage replication between site A & site C for some VMs which are protected.

2.Set storage replication between site B & site D for some VMs which are protected.

3. Test recovery plan for site C & D with disturbing replication between A & B.

Is it possible? Current vSphere version is 5.5 & SRM is 5.8

Thanks

How to Update DNS with SRM

$

Hi All,

We are planning to deploy SRM in our office. As per the Network architecture the IP's of Virtual Machines(All Windows) will be changed at DR. Now the first question that comes into one's mind that how the DNS will be updated with the DR IP address of Virtual Machines.

I have searched a lot about this topic and I can find "dns_update.cmd" scripting process to update the DNS or to use Dynamic DNS but only in old URL's & Document. However in the latest SRM documentation I cant see such script or process details.

As per some of the latest blogs Windows Machines will be able to update their DNS record during the boot at the DR Site, but I cannot find any relevant document to support this.

Can anyone guide about the process of updating DNS for Windows Virtual Machine when their IP address are going to be changed at the DR site please share any relvant document if the VM's will update DNS record during reboot with new IP.

Recovery of VM using vRA 6.2.3 user portal instead of SRM 5.8 as part of recovery plan

Env Information:

SRM 5.8

vRA 6.2.3

We have limited compute capacity in recovery site than the protection site (Enough storage available, all VMs in protected site is getting replicated to recovery site), hence we would like to recover the VMs in a controlled manner in case of DR.., though this can be achieved by creating an appropriate recovery plan to bring up only the required VMs.

This environment is for developers who has more than 2-3 virtual machines and in case of disaster, users would need to choose the most critical VM to be up at the recovery site. Is this possible?

Will we be able to recover a VM as part of SRM without Power ON? in a powered OFF state

We have an integration with vRA for machine provisioning, thinking to use vRA web portal for users to Power ON the VM of their choice.

Thanks

vVNX SRM 6.1 vSphere 6 u2

First of all I saw this post: VNX SRA for SRM 6.1

The main reason I run the virtual storage appliances is to demo SRM to customers.  For a long time I ran the UBER VNX but wanted the new plugins for vCenter6 plus I was having too many Java issues.

Issue: NO SRA's for any VNX unit on SRM 6.1?  Kinda surprised.

Running vVNX v8.1.3-37078.ova, SRM 6.1, vSphere 6 update2.

Error: no storageports found on the SRA configuration within SRM.

I have two appliances running, NFS datastore created, VM's in the datastore, and the nfs volume is replicated.  Just there is no way to inform SRM of such.

Also have a post in the EMC communities: https://community.emc.com/message/930914

Any advice would be appreciated.

Two site SRM V6 using VCenter Appliance

$

We are having a problem with an SRM partnership that was working however since having to reinstall a VCenter server at the second site is now having issues, both sites were at v6 with the VCenter installed on Windows however since I had to replace the vcenter I opted for using a VCA.

I am being told that when using the VC with embedded PSC the SRM site paring will not happen as it is not a supported configuration.

The following link kind of shows the VC's with external PSC's but then states "the platform Services Controller instances can be either external to vCenter Server or embedded in the vCenter Server instances.

http://pubs.vmware.com/srm-61/index.jsp#com.vmware.srm.install_config.doc/GUID-F474543A-88C5-4030-BB86-F7CC51DADE22.html

Before I take the drastic step of reinstalling both vCenters can anybody confirm if the above is correct.

Thanks

Our vCenter Service Status is showing an error under VR Management.

"Unable to retrieve health data from https://xx.xx.xx.xx:8080/service/hms/cgi/health.py"

This error is pointing at the ip address of our VRMS server.  This error is displayed for both our vcenter implementations pointing at our VMRS servers at each location.

Failed SRM Site

Hi everyone,

I have the following scenario: Two SRM sites, each site has a VM with SRM Server 5.5 and a physical host with vCenter 5.5 and SQL Server 2008 R2 hosting vCenter and SRM databases. Replication is done via vSphere Replication.

On the protected site, we needed to migrate vCenter and SQL to a new physical host. vCenter was reinstalled and its database restored. The SRM database was also restored, but logically SRM plugin is not available. Now the SRM server is not working. We checked the SRM database properties and logins, checked the DSN configuration, and ran installcreds.exe. When trying to repair the SRM installation using the setup program and the Modify option, setup stops immediately.

If on the protected site we decide to create a new database, reinstall SRM, and pair it to the recovery site, will this affect the protection groups and recovery plans that are still visible on the recovery site? Any thoughts about this case is really appreciated.
